A small, slender snake superficially similar to the Adder but much more lightly built. Unlike the adder this snake is relatively cylindrical in cross section, with an indistinct neck and narrow head. Colour shows a high degree of variation with the background colour being a fairly uniform grey, brown or, occasionally orange. Markings consist of dark spots or blotches running down the back and sides, typically with a twin line of paired spots running down the middle of the back, quite distinct from the adder’s zigzag markings. The ventral surface can be grey, red, orange or black and may be mottled. There is almost always a prominent eye stripe that runs onto the side of the neck. Melanic animals are known but are extremely rare. Again unlike the adder, the smooth snake has round pupils and smooth (not keeled) scales which give it its common name. Males have relatively longer and broader tails than do females
